Image title and description 1: OVER/TIME: Three of Cups
One of my most recent portfolios is called Curved Matrix and double exposes the plastic sippy cups my daughter used as a toddler. The individual elements of these geometric pieces are close-ups of brightly-colored cups of my daughter’s from years ago but still in use. These images simultaneously function as formal, colorful, banner-like pieces and as further, more abstracted, self-portraits with elements from my life as a mother. As in all of the work here, and, I think you will see, all of my work from the beginning of my artistic life, the viewer is invited to sew together the images, meld the parts, attach the facets to each other for a completed picture, and, travel through and attach the various multiple exposed layers, in an act of seeing itself.

This fruit was hanging from a trellis in the beautiful Huntington Library and Botanical Garden in Pasadena this past fall. I captured its habit in modules, in sequence, over time.

This grid includes smaller versions of previous grids, time-lapsed light trails, a line chart of financial assets seen over time, and my medication pill box , all double and triple exposed with other grids of the same subjects. My pill box has the distinct characteristic of spelling out, in initial letters, the passing days of the week.

This grid of my camera roll in the app, UNION – an app chosen because its camera roll has no lines between the modules as does the iPhone camera roll – includes a plethora of images; the Beech tree on the UNC campus that I pass regularly in my walking practice, some screen shots of PR images from my show, VISAGE, FLORA, FACET & BEVEL, that was mounted in the Vault at the 21C Museum Hotel in the summer and fall, a small reproduction of a Beverly McIver VOTE screen print of her painting (hence the title of this piece) as well as a shot of a painting I did in 1980 when I was getting my MFA in painting from Queens College in NYC, along with an old photo of girls in Amsterdam who were friends of Anne Frank's. These are all random, yet composed, images that take me, and the viewer, across time.

I used this, and the many iterations of this image I created, in a video, to commemorate the events of that day, the year before, using the music of Max Richter. I have used the many variations I create of all of these vertical "banner" pieces in image/music collaborations I have been making over the last year or so, on my phone, in Instagram. Before that, and during the last year as well, I have collaborated with my husband, the composer, Allen Anderson, to make Fine Art videos that have been projected at concert halls here in North Carolina. I have just been commissioned to make a 35 minute video for the Festival on the Hill for the Spring of 2026, syncing my images with the music of Chou Wen Chung, his String Quartet No. 1 "Clouds".
